Bob Kirkpatrick/The Sun Tribune - Lanes are narrowed on 1st Avenue as crews begin reconstructing the roadway between SR 26 as Spruce Street.

The reconstruction of 1st Avenue between SR 26 and Spruce Street is in full swing. The $1.7 million bid was awarded to Varela & Associates Inc. Engineering and Management firm out of Spokane.

The work entails grinding 21,000 square yards of pavement and 9,000 square yards of full depth reclamation with Cement Treatment Base (CTB) to lay 4,400 lineal feet of storm sewer pipe. The roadway will then be overlaid with 4,200 tons of fiber reinforced hot mixed asphalt. Demolition and replacement of curbs and gutters, sidewalks, driveways and curb ramps are also part of the work being done.

The project is being financed with WSDOT Transportation Improvement funds and is expected to be complete Oct. 9.
